Women and Whaling

Tasmania’s colonial whaling enterprises brought great wealth to Hobart and helped shaped the character of the city and its port. Drawn from both Narryna’s own collection and private collections, this exhibition includes a stunning display of scrimshaw, depictions of women from all walks of life, and an extensive array of functional domestic items typically associated with women’s work. The exhibition also explores how whaling products were used in the fashion industry and as an essential ingredient in perfumes and cosmetics.
