Railton is Tasmania’s town of topiary – the art of pruning shrubs into fantastic shapes. Railton has over 100 topiary growing around the town including lions, horses, crocodiles, alpaca, Tasmanian tigers, trains and Tassie devils.
There are also full scenes made from topiary like farming and wildlife scenes and an ocean scene created in a hedge where you can take a selfie with a great white shark. Railton’s topiary has featured on Better Home and Gardens, Costa’s Gardening Odyssey, Rivers to Reef, and on the BBC’s All Around the Place.
Pick up a free topiary map from the shops in town and do the topiary trail, enjoy free family fun and include a picture opportunity with your favourite topiary or look for the murals in town depicting the town’s history.
Other attractions include the Seven Sheds Brewery Meadery and Hop Garden, a delightful country tea-room famous for its rabbit and wallaby pies, and a crafts gallery stocked with local handmade goods.
There’s also good fishing in nearby streams.
Railton is a one-hour drive (81 km) from Launceston.
