Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island. It consists purely of sand and yet it supports large strands of lush tropical rainforest. You’ll see an extraordinary array of buttress-rooted trees, strangler figs, rare primitive cycads and huge satinays.
The sands support more than 40 crystal clear freshwater lakes. Their favourite, Lake McKenzie is rightfully known as the jewel of Fraser Island. Don’t forget to pack the swimming gear!
The island also abounds with wildlife. It’s a bird lover’s paradise with over 240 species recorded in the area. And you may even be lucky enough to spot a full-breed dingo in the wild.
This holiday begins with a cruise over to the island from Hervey Bay, watching for whales, dolphins and sharks en route. From here, your journey on foot encompasses an amazing variety of landscapes. Much of the walking is remote, taking you close to the tranquil beauty of the natural environment and away from the busy tourist routes.

The Tropical Hiker tour includes Daintree World Heritage Area – where the rainforest meets the reef; learn how the Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people lived in the tropical rainforests; unique wildlife – azure Ulysses butterflies, platypus, cassowaries, crocodiles; and then unwind at beautiful Mission Beach – all rooms have ocean views.
This is a circuit trip from Cairns. Destinations include the Atherton Tablelands – home of the famous Millaa Millaa Falls. Rainforest walks will lead you away from the tourist route to remote gorges, cascading waterfalls and secluded lakes. In the Daintree World Heritage Area you’ll learn about the importance of mangroves, walk to Cape Tribulation and enjoy a stay at a rainforest retreat. At Mossman Gorge you’ll walk with the Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people and learn about their bush foods.

This fabulous long distance walking track connects the two high plateaus of Lamington and Springbrook, progressing through magnificent World Heritage subtropical rainforests.
This untouched wilderness offers walking amongst massive strangler figs, ancient Antarctic beech, red cedar and booyongs tower overhead while lush palms, vines, ferns and orchids flourish beneath. This is your chance to hug a 3000 year old tree that stands as evidence of links to Gondwanaland. Climb the huge strangler fig tower to marvel at the upper forest levels on the Treetops Walk. Hike the Lamington Traverse on the famous Border Track that follows the New South Wales / Queensland border.
More than 160 species of sub-tropical birds will keep any bird-lover engrossed.
On the Springbrook side the rainforest is punctuated by cascading streams and plummeting waterfalls. Criss-cross pristine creeks and pick from the many waterfalls for a lunch spot.

The Gold Coast Hinterland Walk includes fantastic hiking in the Lamington and Springbrook National Parks, located inland from the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast is about one hour south of Brisbane.
On this trip you walk from one accommodation to the next while they move your luggage ahead for you. You will walk independently without a guide, using their marked maps and easy-to-follow Walk Notes. You need to form your own group of two or more people and can choose your own starting date.
This is a World Heritage Area where new plants are being found, classified and named even today. Massive strangler figs, ancient Antarctic beech, red cedar, rosewood and booyongs tower overhead whilst hundreds of different species of palms, vines, ferns and orchids flourish beneath.

Waterfall Way is an untapped, raw landscape which offers an abundant array of fauna and flora. A truly eclectic environment which includes World Heritage rainforests, waterfalls and escarpment country. The walking is stunningly diverse, expect hiking through mountain ranges, subtropical rainforests and beside delightful streams.
Dorrigo National Park, part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area offers stunning scenery that has been millions of years in the making. Venture onto Skywalk for a bird’s eye view of the rain forest canopy. You can see over the remote Bellinger Valley and all the way to the ocean.
Waterfalls on the Guy Fawkes River plunge over steep basalt ledges into a vast wilderness area. Marvel at Wollomombi Falls, the highest waterfall in New South Wales and the second highest in all of Australia.
At Cathedral Rock you’ll find Snowgums and huge granite boulders. New England National Park reaches 1564 metres above sea level and there’s nothing to interrupt the view.
Of course as always with an Auswalk holiday, they can’t think of a better way to reward a captivating day on the trail than a delicious meal, a glass (or two) of local wine and a comfortable bed.

Carnarvon Gorge is a magnificent outback oasis teeming with wildlife. Carnarvon Creek carves its tortuous route through the spectacular sandstone gorge, its permanent water nurturing stands of cabbage palms and pockets of remnant rainforest with rare king ferns with five metre fronds.
The steep overhanging walls of Carnarvon Gorge house some of the most vivid Aboriginal artwork anywhere in the country, with animals, humans, weapons and tools all clearly depicted in rich ochre patterns. You’ll walk the length of the gorge, crisscrossing the river on stepping-stones many times. There are also fascinating side gorges for hiking into. Climb into the Amphitheatre and follow Warrumbah Gorge till it narrows to just a metre wide.
Another bonus is to stop at Cania Gorge, a little known and very isolated National Park with eucalypt forest, rugged rock formations and lots of amazing wildlife. It’s hard to beat a campfire, so that’s what they do at Cania.
Three distinctly different areas make this a holiday with lots of variety. And with two guides looking after you, a range of easier and harder walking options are available along the way.
