National Parks and Reserves

Kaluna Park is a 5.2ha natural remnant of River Red Gum riverine bushland, within easy walking distance from the city centre featuring 1.2km of walking trails. It is bordered by the King River, a billabong and a levee bank which separates it from Merriwa Park.

The area has undergone regular bush restoration since 1995. There are a number of seats and the park is a haven for a variety of birds. A brochure with map and notes about the park is available from the Visitor Information Centre. Barbecue and toilets are located nearby in Merriwa Park.

Close to the centre of Wangaratta, Kaluna Island adjoins Kaluna Park and is bordered by the King River. It is a remnant of River Red Gum riverine woodland and covers an area of over 18ha. Apple Box, a rare tree for the area, and old River Bottlebrush are still present, with many trees over 300 years old. Also, look for interesting native grasses and birdlife. The only entry point is for foot traffic over a concrete bridge on the other side of the levee wall at the bottom of Thomas Street, off Wilson Road. This bridge crosses the anabranch and leads to a cleared walking track that circles the park. Access is difficult during periods of high river flow which may last for weeks at a time.
