Natural Attractions

Beginning in the heart of the Alpine National Park, the King River gains momentum in the Buffalo National Park before being captured by Lake William Hovell which is set in mountain bushland and provides fishing, boating and picnic facilities in tranquil scenery.

The magic of the river becomes accessible at the top end of the King Valley. Surrounded by open pastures and farmland, the King Valley hosts an abundance of renowned Italian varietal vineyards.

Paddle
The top end of the river (closer to Whitfield) delivers grade two and three rapids for those serious paddlers and the bottom end (closer to Wangaratta) is dotted with easy access points, and sandy beaches and is perfect for beginner and younger paddlers – ideal for families eager to lounge in the shade of gum trees, skim a few rocks and stay cool during summer.

Fishing
With loads of easy access areas, the King is a favourite amongst local fishermen who are looking to hook brown trout, Murray cod and Redfins.

Top and tailed by Cheshunt and Milawa respectively, the King Valley makes for a beautiful day of winery road-tripping. it is a picturesque and quintessential high country food and wine journey that is made all the more appealing by your ability to dip your toes in one of Victoria’s most beautiful rivers.
