With the South West Coastal Birdwatching Experience, Melbourne Birding Tours will take you to unique coastal heathland, ironbark forests, ocean beaches and the famous Western Treatment Plant.

South west of Melbourne you will find some of the best birding destinations in Australia.

Starting at 6:00am, however other times can be arranged. Melbourne Birding Tours travel to Point Addis where their first target will be the Rufous Bristlebird. Other birds you may find here include Australasian Gannet, Black-browed Albatross, Singing Honeyeater, Silvereye, Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater and more.

Travelling to the Anglesea Heathland, famous for its diverse vegetation and for bird species which are heathland specialists such as the shy Southern Emu Wren. Other birds that may be encountered include the Chestnut-rumped Heathwren, Gang-gang Cockatoo and Rufous Whistler. At the nearby Ironbark forest you may see Crimson Rosella, Crescent Honeyeater, White-eared Honeyeater, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo and White-plumed Honeyeaters to name a few.

Next stop is the Western Treatment Plant, internationally recognised RAMSAR site, considered to be one of the best birding locations in Australia and a mecca for shorebirds, waterfowl, raptors and seabirds. Finishing around 5:00pm (later finishing times available).

Passing through four different habitats including coastal, wetland, farmland and forest, Melbourne Birding Tours have designed the Four Habitats Birdwatching Tour so you can bird-watch many species in one day.

The perfect tour for the beginner, photographer and the serious birder, you will be visiting areas with a high density of species so there is no need to rush around and have time to see, photograph and learn about each bird.

7am is the best time to leave however, later pick-up times may be arranged. Travelling 40 minutes to the South-West of Melbourne to the magnificent You Yangs Regional Park. The habitat here is classified as a dry eucalyptus forest and is very easy to walk through. The park is filled with honeyeaters, parrots, cockatoos and whistlers.

From here you will travel across farmland to the Western Treatment Plant at Werribee. This internationally recognised RAMSAR listed site is considered to be one of the best birding locations in Australia. No matter what time of the year high numbers of species are found within the property. It is a mecca for shorebirds, waterfowl, raptors and seabirds. Birding at it’s best.

With Melbourne Birding Tours, experience the Great Ocean Road Birdwatching Tour, which takes place in one of the most scenic locations on earth.

The focus of this tour is the bird life, however you will be awe-struck at every turn by the rugged coastlines, pristine forests and the natural biodiversity of the region.

As you slowly make your way toward Cape Otway; the southernmost point of the Australian mainland, you will have the opportunity to stop along the way and search for some of the special birds that are found here; attempting to see the Southern Emu Wren, Gang Gang Cockatoo, the impressive Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo and the much sought after Rufous Bristlebird.

You will be given the best chance to see these species and more as you explore several different habitats on your way west to the award-winning Great Ocean Eco-Lodge.

Along the way you will see the birds, some mammals and learn about the area’s history.

A 7:00am pick up, travelling down the Great Ocean Road to Cape Otway. Staying the night at the award winning Great Ocean Ecolodge.

You will drive back the next day at a leisurely pace, birding all the way.

This two day tour with Melbourne Birding Tours explores Chiltern – Mt Pilot National Park, one of the best remaining examples of Box-ironbark Forest.

The area is regarded as one of the best birding sites in the country and is home to some of the most exciting birds in Australia.

Birds such as the stunningly beautiful Turquoise Parrot, the endangered Regent Honeyeater, Mistletoebird, White-browed Babbler, Speckled Warbler and Painted Honeyeater. As well as the birds, you may also encounter mammals and reptiles as well; it is an area which we are sure you will love.

The Forest to the Sea Birdwatching Tour is a non-stop birdwatching extravaganza combining the best Melbourne Birding Tours experiences into one big day of birding.

You will be amazed at the diversity of the species you encounter and if you thrive on birding, then this 12 hour tour for you.

Picked up from your accommodation at 6:00am, it is an early start however it will ensure that you will see the Dandenong Ranges at its best.

Spend the morning searching for birds such as the secretive Lyrebird, Eastern Whipbird, parrots such as Eastern Rosella, Crimson Rosella, Galah, King Parrot, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo and the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo.

We will then collect lunch at one of the gourmet cafes to have later (lunch is included in the price of the tour).

We will then travel on to the Western Treatment Plant where 100 species can be seen on the one site; birding will commence upon arrival and continue non-stop until 5:00pm.

If the birding is too good to stop and light allows, a later finish is possible. You will see ducks, egrets, herons, raptors, crakes, rails, honeyeaters, woodswallows and more.
