Shepparton Aboriginal Street Art Project Murals

Landmarks and Buildings

The Aboriginal Street Art Project has been named by locals as ‘Dana Djirrungana Dunguludja Yenbena-l’ which means ‘Proud, Strong Aboriginal People’ in Yorta Yorta language. This Project is in partnership with Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation and Rumbalara Cooperative, and is aimed at celebrating and recognising local Aboriginal history.

The Shepparton Aboriginal Street Art Project Murals were painted by well known artists Adnate and Cam Scale. Two murals depict the late William Cooper and the late Pastor Sir Douglas Nicholls KCVO OBE MBE, leaders who made major contributions the region and Australia as a whole; and two significant past local elders Aunty Margaret Tucker (MBE), one of Australia’s first female Aboriginal rights activists, and Nora ‘Nanny’ Charles, one of the earliest and best known local Aboriginal midwives. These are located in the laneway off Fryers St, Shepparton.

Matt Adnate also painted two more murals. One is located at 176 Welsford Street, of the late Aunty Violet Harrison and late Aunty Mary James. Another mural in the series is located at 163 Welsford Street, depicting the late Aunty Geraldine Briggs and the late Aunty Elizabeth Morgan. All four ladies are highly regarded local Yorta Yorta Elders.

This Project includes a further mural at 70 Welsford Street, painted by Cam Scale, featuring Private Daniel Cooper, a Yorta Yorta man who fought for Australia during World War 1.
