The Equus Museum of Wooden Horses

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Located at Equus at Moonambel Vineyard, this unique Museum of Wooden Horses stables an astonishing variety of rocking horses, carousel ponies and wheeled equines from the 1840s – 1960s. The horses, originating from Australia, England, Germany, USA, France and other countries were collected by Patricia Mullins, well known for her work in restoration of wooden horses including those on the carousels at Luna Park Melbourne and the Melbourne Zoo. Visitors to the Museum will also find the reference book, “The Rocking Horse, a History of Moving Toy Horses” researched and written by Patricia over seven years. Only limited copies remain of this internationally acclaimed work.

Patricia is also an award-winning illustrator of picture books. Available at the Equus cellar door shop, they can be personally signed. “Shoes From Grandpa” (Mem Fox; 30th Anniversary Ed.) “Phar Lap” (Jackie Kerin; Museum of Victoria) and “Lightning Jack” (Glenda Millard), are just a few. Limited edition, Artist giclee prints of selected illustrations are for sale, too. View original work, plus sketches and preliminary material that went into making the books.

Getting to the Museum and the Equus Cellar Door involves driving up a hill. At the top, visitors are rewarded by the 360-degree stunning views over the Pyrenees Ranges.

Call ahead, bookings essential for groups – maximum six-eight in the Museum or Cellar Door. Wine tasting – weekends.
