The rich-toned viola rarely gets a chance to shine as a solo instrument – but charismatic violist Christopher Moore breaks all the stereotypes, perfectly partnered with Melbourne’s adored pianist Caroline Almonte. The warm, lyrical Romanticism of Brahms connects perfectly with Rebecca Clarke’s passionate Morpheus. Benjamin Britten’s haunting and poignant homage to John Dowland is a gem of the repertoire – and the story of the viola turns another page in this concert, with a brand new work by Australia’s own Alice Humphries.
