Lake Benalla and the surrounding waterways are inhabited by many native animals including fish, platypus, rakali (water rat) and three species of fresh water turtles (Eastern Snake-necked Turtle, Broad-shelled Turtle and Murray River Turtle).
Many fresh water turtle species, including these three species, are in decline due to habitat degradation, pollution of our waterways and reduced water quality.
Turtles Australia Inc. and the Benalla Rural City Council are partners in a clean-up paddle and a clean-up walk for turtles. The clean up will also benefit other aquatic animals that inhabit the Benalla Lake.
Participants are required to register for the event on the day or via the CUA Day website.
Please wear gloves, sun protection (hat, suitable clothing), enclosed shoes, water bottle, snacks, family and friends and your own canoe for paddling (optional).
For more information go to the “Clean Up Australia Day” website .
