Collection leads: Kate Beynon—kindred spirits: a virtual exhibition

Exhibition and Shows

22 Jan 2021 to 24 Jan 2021 Daily Event

Kate Beynon—kindred spirits is part of the ‘Collection leads’ series of exhibitions that draw on major works held in the Geelong Gallery collection to build a deeper understanding of the artist’s practice.

Kate Beynon’s ‘Graveyard scene/the beauty and sadness of bones’ (2014–15) is based on a scene from ‘An-Li: a Chinese ghost tale’, the artist’s re-telling of a supernatural story of two young spirits who traverse opposing worlds: one aquatic, the other earthly. This ‘Collection leads’ exhibition includes watercolours, paintings and soft sculptures that expand on the story of An-Li and provide greater insights to Beynon’s practice in which she merges diverse pictorial traditions with personal histories to address issues of hybridity, cultural identity and feminism.
