Eugenia Lim: Yellow Peril

Exhibition and Shows

24 Aug 2019 to 27 Oct 2019

Eugenia Lim is an Australian artist of Chinese-Singaporean descent who works across video, performance and installation to explore how national identities and stereotypes cut, divide and bond our globalised world.

Yellow Peril is the first in Lim’s Ambassador trilogy of works. It explores the historical and ongoing impact and influence of mining and immigration on the Australian identity, comprising video, screen printed mylar blankets and sculpture. It features Lim as a gold Mao-suited ‘ambassador’ sent back in time to the Australian goldfields of the 1850s, an era of ‘gold-diggers’, xenophobia and the White Australia Policy.

This performative and playful exploration of the Chinese presence in Australia, inspired by the observational comedy of Jacques Tati’s Playtime, explores the evolving dynamics between Australia and China and the interconnected nature of the socio-economic future, the personal and political search for wealth, identity and power.
