7 Jun 2022 Monthly Event
The Rookies was formed in 2014 to play background music on a Wednesday night at the Brunswick St bar, the Rooks Return (from whence comes the band’s name). Originally intended as a quiet project for the band’s members to learn jazz standards and develop their craft, the weekly residency has since become a staple of the Fitzroy live music scene, attracting crowds of revellers with the Rookies’ welcoming, passionate, and high-spirited performances that break down Western music culture’s antiquated boundaries between band and audience. The Rookies’ deep love of music is charged with a fierce humanism––a belief that holding space through art is a life-affirming act that elevates the human spirit and protests the injustices of the modern world.
The band now brings this passion and philosophy to the Jazzlab, the Rookies’ second home, where they’ve held numerous residencies since the club’s inception and hosted the MIJF jam session three years running. For this new residency on the first Tuesday of each month, the Rookies intend to explore more deeply the question of what it means to Play Jazz in the 21st century in Australia, separated by time, space, and culture from the origins and tradition of American jazz.
