Pathways for Change: Landscape Master Planning for Botanic Gardens

Classes, Lessons, Workshops and Talks

20 Mar 2019

How can design effectively balance preservation and respond to contemporary pressures and community needs?

Andrew Laidlaw, Landscape Architect, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Melbourne Gardens is the lead designer of the Master Plan that will guide our planning until 2038. Developed against the backdrop of a changing climate, increased recognition of Aboriginal cultural heritage values, construction of the new Anzac Station and the evolving role the Gardens play in the broader life and health of the city, the Master Plan sensitively balances these pressures with the preservation of the historic picturesque landscape designed by William Guilfoyle.

Hear from Andrew about the Master Plan and its evolutionary process to date, and about the challenges of working within a multi-layered space where history is deeply engrained in the living landscape.

Presented by Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria as part of Melbourne Design Week – an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV.
