Peter Coates: A Portrait Of A Place

Exhibition and Shows

4 Dec 2021 to 13 Feb 2022 Once Only Event

Peter Coates: A Portrait Of A Place is a free exhibition at the Hamilton Gallery.

Known locally as ‘Hamilton’s Rembrandt’, Peter Coates is an ordinary man with an extraordinary talent.

In his first solo exhibition, Coates presents a striking visual diary profiling the faces of well-known locals, from significant past residents to fellow artists and community heroes.

He explores the place where he lives through the people who live here, stating; “My art is not about me, it’s about who I paint.”

A contemporary artist working with traditional subject matter, Coates is heavily influenced
by the dramatic style of the Baroque period. His portraits are stark and poignant, capturing the essence of his subject in each brushstroke.

Come face to face with each portrait, exploring your own feelings of identity and ‘localhood’.

Peter will also be painting live at various times throughout the exhibition.

This exhibition is a COVIDsafe accessible and inclusive event taking place on Gunditjmara Country. Attendees 12 and over must show proof of vaccination status or medical exemption to gain entry.
