An exhibition of recent work by Bullarto artist. The mainly large-scale watercolours give an insight into Edward’s captivation with the majestic beauty of Mount Buffalo. From rocky outcrops, monoliths and highland bogs to the quiet snow cover and the burst of spring bloom, he captures the seasonal transitions of this central Victorian jewel. As in life, his work depicts contrast, with the dead stands of snow gums and the new growth since the wildfires in December 2006.
The exhibition features over 70 works born out of seasonal hikes over the last two years. Each work bears a poetic title which provides insight into the artist’s contemplations on our greater connection to the natural world and the spiritual nature of all living things. Full of the dynamism of the mostly untouched mountain, his works imbue a palpable energy.
“With a vibrancy and immediacy in the paint application, my aim was to capture the invisible and intangible energy of the mountain.” – Phillip Edwards
Phillip Edwards studied at the Victorian College of the Arts. With several solo exhibitions of sculpture and painting, his recent work is fresh, mature and unencumbered by ego.
Seasons of Life and Mountain: opening 4:00-6:00pm 10 March.
