The Little Yarra Steiner School is proud to bring their annual performance of Bach’s St John Passion to St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne.
Every year the students, staff and friends of the school perform this work as a musical gift to the community at their school in Yarra Junction. This year is the 100th Anniversary of Waldorf (Steiner) education, creating an opportunity to bring the celebration to the wider community of Melbourne.
This year, the school community will be joined by other accomplished soloists and performers including Genevieve Dickson, Maurice Wan, Maia Hanrahan, Chris Clifford and Lyndon Green. We are also privileged to welcome Lisa Devine to introduce the evening.
About the work: St John Passion is a Passion or Oratorio composed by Johann Sebastian Bach during his first year as director of church music in Leipzig. It was written in two halves, originally performed either side of a sermon during Good Friday Vespers in 1724. The work follows chapters 18 and 19 of the Gospel of John in the Luther bible, with the addition of two lines from the Gospel of Matthew. Bach revised the Passion a number of times until it reached its completed and current version.
