The Lady in the Van follows the story of Alan Bennet and his somewhat strained relationship with Mary Shepherd, an eccentric homeless woman who he befriended in the 70’s. Allowing her to park her van in his driveway for three months – Mary ends up residing there for 15 years.
As the story goes on, Bennett learns Mary’s true identity; Margaret Fairchild, and her unfortunate past.
