Latrobe Chorale and solosits sing wonderful melodies in Haydn’s “Mass in Time of War” and a program of other works at Traralgon Uniting Church on Saturday 16 June.
This Haydn Mass is known in German as the “Paukenmesse” because it features kettle drums. The Mass dates from 1795 and was one of a series written for his patron late in the composer’s life. The music displays Haydn’s virtuosity as a composer in this unusual setting of the latin Mass.
Other works dating from the mid to late eighteenth century by Handel, Mozart and Durante will be part of the program as will vocal solos.
The Latrobe Chorale is a Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass (SATB) choir based in the Latrobe Valley. The choir performs sacred, classical and other works from the choral repertoire. Their Musical Director is Mary Mirtschin. Guest Conductor for these concerts will be well known Melbourne conductor, Peter Bandy.
To accompany the Haydn Mass, Joan Evans on cello and Brian Chapman on keyboard will be joined by Leon Duncan, timpani and John Schmidli and Tina Thompson on trumpets.
Audience members are invited to join the choir for afternoon tea following the concert.
