Feather Arbour by Ned Khan

Galleries, Museums and Collections

A dynamic, shifting artwork by internationally-renowned American artist Ned Kahn, this public artwork is located outside of Brookfield Place, in the heart of Perth’s bustling Central Business District. The artwork was briefed, developed and managed by Public Arts organisation FORM. This installation called for a piece which responded to the themes of light, discovery and memory – as well as taking into account the environmental conditions of the site.

Kahn’s response to this was to create Feather Arbour, a work evocative of feathers and fish fins, subtly referencing the nearby Swan River ecosystem. Like most of Kahn’s installations, the work is a combination of science, art and technology, replicating the forms and forces of nature, reflecting the unseen movement of wind. Ned Kahn is famous for his museum exhibits built for the Exploratorium in San Francisco. He has won a United States National Design Award for environmental design and collaborated with Koning Eizenberg Architecture Incorporated on a piece for the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. The work is a series of nine, six-metre tall ‘feathers’, constructed from stainless steel and sprung steel.
