Artistic endeavour is not something you expect to see in a prison, however Fremantle Prison offers a wealth of artworks, the origins of which span almost 140 years.

The cells and yards are covered with works painted by prisoners, including convict etchings, Aboriginal landscapes, dot paintings and murals and a range of graffiti and tattoo art.

In addition to this fixed artwork, the Prison holds an extensive range of art by renowned artists, such as Jimmy Pike and Revel Cooper in its museum collection.

This collection is diverse, comprising approximately 12,000 items, including photographs, documents, furnishings, artworks, clothing, weapons and archaeological material. It spans the entirety of the Prison’s operations, from the beginning of construction in 1851 through to 1991 when the Prison was decommissioned and closed.

Step inside and “do time” with an experienced guide to see behind the scenes of the Fremantle Prison Collection and view various prisoner artworks.

Inclusions – Exclusive tour experience, behind-the-scenes access to museum collection and complimentary copy of the publication, “Art Behind Bars: Murals and Graffiti of Fremantle Prison”.
