The STS Leeuwin II is a three-masted barquentine with over 810 square metres of sail and an overall length of 55 metres, with 16 sails The Leeuwin is Australia’s largest ocean-going tall ship and is primarily used to deliver youth development programs through the medium of tall ship sailing.
The Leeuwin Youth Explorer Voyage program for 14 to 25 year olds consists of week-long voyages where up to 40 participant are taught to sail under the guidance of experienced volunteers, under the watchful eye of the qualified permanent crew. During the voyage the young participants are encouraged to reach their personal potential and develop life-skills such as leadership, communications skills, teamwork and sense of community. The program is accredited by the Curriculum Council of WA (WACE) and can also count towards the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen’s Scout Award.
STS Leeuwin II is owned and operated by Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation Ltd, a not-for-profit organisation based in Fremantle.
During the summer months the general public has the opportunity to sail on the Leeuwin during three-hour sails, on select weekends from November to March.

Youth Explorer Voyages are open to anyone aged between 14 and 25 and allow young people to experience a unique, challenging and inspirational ocean adventure. The voyages aim to increase self-awareness, develop communication, teamwork and leadership skills and create a strong sense of community in a fun and exciting environment.
Leeuwin II is a working ship and during the voyage all participants will get involved in most aspects of ship operations, from taking the helm and steering the ship to climbing the masts, working aloft and standing watch while sailing through the night. The Leeuwin operates under the principle of ‘challenge by choice’. The level of the challenge is up to each participant and they know from experience that the more a participant is willing to challenge themselves, the more they will get out of it!
No previous sailing experience is required: just willingness for adventure and being ready to have the time of your life!
People aged 14 to 25 who need assistance to cover part of the voyage fare are eligible to apply for scholarships offered through the foundation. Please call them for more information.

During a three-hour short sail aboard the 1850s style barquentine ship you can choose to take part in sailing activities such as raising the sails, taking the helm and possibly even climbing the bowsprit. Or you can just sit back and enjoy the sail!
Whichever way you choose, sailing aboard the STS Leeuwin II is a truly unique and memorable experience. All sails depart from Fremantle and include light snacks and refreshments.
