Celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultures, the annual Birak Concert boasts a stellar line up of indigenous entertainment.
Birak is the Nyoongar season for the hot and dry months of December and January; during this time the Moodjar trees flowers bright orange and are known as the Nyoongar Christmas Trees. In local dreaming, it is said that when a Nyoongar person passes away their spirit enters the tree where they wait for Birak. When the tree flowers, their spirit goes west over Wadjemup (Rottnest Island) to be with their ancestors.
This year’s line-up features Western Australian talent, including a traditional Welcome to Country, Lilly Gogos, Flewnt, Pipeline Band and more! In addition to the jam-packed stage schedule there will be community stalls, the Elders Marquee and Perth Heat is returning for those sport enthusiasts.
Hosted by Phil Walley-Stack from Walleystack International, the event is the perfect opportunity for all Australians to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. If you are unable to make it on the day, the event will be broadcast by Noongar Radio.
Bring a picnic blanket, sunscreen and hat to enjoy the event from day through to evening.
