Five Short Blasts – Perth Festival

Festivals and Celebrations

20 Feb 2019 to 3 Mar 2019

All aboard! They’re taking you on a tour of Fremantle with a difference. As morning and evening breaks over the port of Fremantle you’re invited to hop on a boat and discover the sights and sounds of this iconic area from the people who live and work there.

Five Short Blasts is the work of Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey, two artists who create unexpected situations for listening. It takes audiences out on the water to listen – to the sounds of maritime activity, nature and a soundtrack of voices associated with this special place. The work literally navigates through a series of overlapping activities, signaled with a composed radio broadcast that inexplicably and ambiguously blends with the ambient soundscape.

In international maritime language the sound signal of five short blasts means ‘I am not sure of your intentions’. Five Short Blasts is inspired and deeply informed by this maritime expression of uncertainty and invites you on a shared journey to navigate the unknown and to discover new ways of seeing.

This event is part of Perth Festival, one of Western Australia’s premier cultural events.
