Millstream

Rural

Millstream Chichester National Park has been likened to the Garden of Eden in the middle of a desert landscape. Follow the lush tree-lined banks of the Fortescue River as it meanders through a magical landscape of rocky peaks, tranquil gorges, hidden rock pools and refreshing springs.

This tropical oasis in the plains of the north Pilbara is two hours by road heading southeast of Karratha. Many visitors make Millstream a must-stop after exploring the ancient canyons of Karijini, and you can even turn your road trip into something of a spiritual journey by following the path of the mystical Warlu (sea serpent) along the Warlu Way. Taking in the natural and cultural highlights of Western Australia’s Gascoyne, Pilbara and Kimberley regions, this 2,480 kilometre interpretive trail reveals the mysteries of the Warlu and other Aboriginal legends.

The homeland and tribal meeting place of the Yinjibarndi people for thousands of years, and the site of an early pastoral station for over a century, today, Millstream invites you to immerse yourself in its breathtaking natural beauty and tranquillity.

Make the Millstream Homestead Visitors Centre your first stop for an introduction to the Yinjibarndi people, early settler history and the unique natural environment before embarking on your own Millstream adventure.

Take a cooling dip at pretty Python Pool and Chinderwarriner Pool. Hit one of the park’s five walking trails to explore the rolling spinifex hills, striking escarpments, winding watercourses and wildlife rich wetlands or climb the peak of Mount Herbert. Admire the plethora of Pilbara wildflowers that bloom after winter rains. Or, just sit and enjoy the striking reflections of the gorges in the rock pools and listen to the echoes of a variety of bird song.

The palms and paperbark trees that line Crossing Pool and Deep Pool provide shady picnic and picturesque camping areas. Pitch your tent and bring along your canoe and fishing gear for one of the best bush camping experiences in the State. Or base yourself by the coast at Karratha and choose from a variety of accommodation options.
