Follow the Swan River to East Perth and you’ll find yourself in one of the city’s most exclusive burbs, transformed from what was once a heavy industrial area into a highly desirable postcode, with top-notch waterfront dining spots, world-class sporting events and even gold. This is the home of the world’s oldest gold mints still operating from its original premises and the Western Australian Cricket Association.

It’s an easy five-minute walk from central Perth along Wellington Street or St George’s/Adelaide Terrace to reach the main hub on Royal Street and the riverside dining enclaves of Claisebrook Cove . Or you can take a four-minute train ride from Perth Station to Claisebrook.

Step through the iron gates of The Perth Mint to feast your eyes on the largest collection of gold bars on Earth, and get your hands on close to one million dollars of pure gold bullion.

Walk through over a century of cricketing history at the Western Australian Cricket Association Museum (WACA). The extensive collection of memorabilia celebrates the game’s greatest legends. Head over to Gloucester Park on a Friday night and you’ll also get to watch some of the sporting champions of harness racing.

Those in search of a little local history will find remnants of East Perth’s heavy industrial past in its many heritage buildings, including the old power station and cement works. You can even step back further in time to the 1800s, and take a self-guided tour of the graveyard where memorial stones of some original Swan River colonists still stand today.

Cycle the river, taking the easy three-kilometre Windan Bridge Loop Trail, or find a quiet picnic spot, away from the hustle and bustle of the city in East Perth’s parks, reserves and gardens. The local’s secret is Queens Gardens, a pretty English-style park filled with lakes, bridges and flowers.

In the evening, the waterfront restaurants offer picture-perfect sunset views across the Swan River. Small bars, pubs and clubs host live music and comedy, and in the summer months a pop-up outdoor cinema brings movies by the river.

[8
3224,3260
4947
3264
3509

4948
5494,5462,5450
2390,2
