LotsaFreshAir

Adventure and Outdoors Tours

LotsaFreshAir is all about helping people connect to wild places in meaningful ways.

They run tours and courses in bushwalking and navigation to help people gain confidence, skills and experience to venture into natural and un-tracked landscapes, such as national parks, state forests and wilderness.

The foundational course is the two-day Introduction to Navigation, which includes classroom-based theory components, delivered in an easy-to-learn staged way. All courses are backed up with practical field experience and all student materials are provided.

Locations include the Blue Mountains (NSW), Scenic Rim (QLD) and Tasmania (Corinna). Depending on the location, courses are run in partnership with local tour operators.

Do you want to learn to navigate with a map and compass? Do you want to read a map with confidence?

Over two jam-packed days, you’ll learn some of the skills essential for off and on-track navigation and build your confidence in finding your way in the bush and making wise decisions in an outdoor environment.

Like a detective in a story, you’ll be equipped with skills and knowledge to find the clues to solve the mysteries of where am I? How do I get where I want to go? And how long will it take me?

Designed for bushwalkers, hikers, canyoners and climbers with little or no experience in map and compass navigation who want to cover the basics, through to intermediate skills associated with traditional navigation methods.

This intensive workshop will cover the basics of choosing the right equipment, map reading and interpretation, reading the land, compass use, timing and pace, taking bearings and loads of other tips and tricks to help you recognise, prevent and solve the most common navigation challenges.

Practice, practice, practice.

The only way to improve map and compass navigation skills, where reading map-to-ground comes naturally and the different methods of using a compass are front-of-mind, is through practice – actually getting out there and doing it.

Leading on from the 2 day Introduction to Navigation course, the weekend will start by spending a couple of hours refreshing the memory on the theory covered in that course, before throwing on daypacks and heading out into the incredible Blue Mountains National Park (different location from Introduction to Navigation course).

In the afternoon, returning to where started, plan and develop an off-track (primarily) route plan for day 2, before enjoying a self-supported car-camp together (with Caro).

Day 2 will be dedicated to carrying out the route plan, discovering this part of the national park, through route finding, discussing navigational decisions in a dynamic environment, along with opportunities to practice triangulation and other methods of compass use all whilst holding fast to the foundations of reading the ground, making wise decisions and walking with the land.
