White Bay Power Station

Entertainment Venues

White Bay Power Station was one of the longest serving power stations in Sydney. It was constructed between 1912 and 1917 to power the tram system and the later rail network. It supplied power to the electricity grid after 1958. The power station remained in service until 1983 when it was decommissioned.

White Bay Power Station is opening its doors to the public for its first major event in over a century, the 2024 Biennale of Sydney. Visitors can explore White Bay Power Station’s historic Turbine Hall and Boiler House while attending the international art exhibition. The event is the first at the site since refurbishment works have been completed. General entry to the Biennale is free, and the event will be held from Saturday 9 March until Monday 10 June 2024. The Biennale of Sydney is an extraordinary exhibition showcasing 96 artists from 50 countries. Titled ‘Ten Thousand Suns’, the program invites you to immerse yourself in rich art and culture through live music, artist talks, panels, performances, workshops, family days and more.

The future vision is for White Bay Power Station to be a multi-purpose cultural facility suitable for a range of cultural, artistic and commercial functions, including First Nations programming.
