Manning Valley Historical Society and Wingham Museum

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Wingham township, situated on the beautiful Manning River, was settled in the mid-1850s. Wingham Museum is located in a historic building once used as a grocery and produce store, circa 1872. The museum overlooks Wingham Town Square (or Central Park) which is surrounded on four sides by heritage buildings.

Visitors to the museum have remarked on the large and extensive collections on display and the diversity of those collections which take people back in time to different ages from the colonial period to more recent times.

On display are family portraits, furniture, fashions, folk crafts, farming tools, transport, glassware and mineral collections, military and indigenous displays, entertainment, local stories and sporting memorabilia.

Within the Museum is the original 19th-century police cell which housed indigenous bush-ranger, Jimmy Governor, following his capture in the Manning Valley by local farmers.

There is also a large collection of books and journals on local history for sale which can be bought at the museum.

Archive resources are also available. Researchers are in attendance on Tuesdays from mid-morning. Please phone before coming. Alternatively, email your inquiries and you will be contacted.
