Parramatta Female Factory

Galleries, Museums and Collections

National Heritage-Listed Parramatta Female Factory (the first purpose gaol for women in Australia) boasts two 1821 Francis Greenway Buildings – the Matron’s Quarters and Administration Building and the Female Factory Hospital (the first female hospital in Australia and delivered 1000s of children) and an 1826 Penitentiary and the Gipps Yard Wall which housed the Gipps 100 cell solitary confinement building.

Even the original clock tower is still working from England and resides in a rebuilt three-storey building using convict masonry.
