Song of the Earth – Newcastle Music Festival

Concert or Performance

8 Aug 2024 Once Only Event

Mahler’s extraordinary music “Song of the Earth” is perhaps the greatest song cycle of the 20th century. It captures the essence of the very human struggle that unites people, and ultimately, the quiet ecstasy of acceptance bringing inner peace. The performance is by Opera Australia artists Iain Henderson and Genevieve Dickson, with Jonathan Wilson on piano using Mahler’s original piano score.

There is so much to enjoy in this beautiful city – the weather is usually crisp and clear. Don’t miss Darby Street and its world of restaurants and designer shops. The light rail and bus services will take you wherever you want to go. There are plenty of great accommodation options.

Christ Church Cathedral, one of the main venues, is only a few minutes’ walk from the ocean. Watch for whales from any beach vantage point, and the famous dolphin pod fishing off the newly refurbished Ocean Baths. Walk to Bar Beach, and lunch at Merewether Surf House. Ride a bike along the Fernleigh Track.

You can also visit tranquil Blackbutt Reserve and Hunter Wetlands Centre: enjoy a meal at the Wetlands Centre’s excellent café. Marvel at migratory waders at Stockton Sandspit as they return from their migration to Siberia and Alaska.

Scenic Hunter Valley vineyards and Port Stephens are an hour away with fabulous dining options and tours. Do join in August!
