An hour’s drive north of Canberra, the quiet country town, is a great getaway, located between Sydney and Melbourne.
In 1824, Hume and Hovell pioneered the famous route, Gunning to Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne; follow their route on the Hume and Hovell Walking Track.
In 1840, the Whitton Gang shot dead Hamilton Hume’s brother John;his grave is in the Gunning Cemetery, and his story is engraved on top.
Wander around historic stone buildings (circa 1800s), such as Pye Cottage. Enjoy the town’s shops, cafe’s and local pub. The quiet roads and pretty countryside are perfect for cycling.
