The river town of Maclean is known as The Scottish Town in Australia and is proud of its Scottish heritage. A cairn of rocks from Australia and Scotland commemorates Maclean’s Scottish pioneers. Each year the clans invade for the Easter Highland Gathering. Many street signs carry Gaelic translations and more than 200 telegraph poles along the main streets have been painted in the tartans of local Scottish clans.
Offering a relaxed lifestyle, take the self-guided heritage walking trail and admire its historic architecture, visit the town’s museum or browse the boutique shops and art and craft galleries. Don’t miss the breathtaking views from the Maclean lookout over the coastal towns and the mighty Clarence River.
