Adelaide Gaol
Things To Do Adelaide, Adelaide, South Australia
The new Women’s and Children’s Hospital is being built next to Adelaide Gaol. This means there are some changes to how you can get to the Gaol. Adelaide Gaol is open as usual. All visits and events, including school trips, will go on as planned. Visit the website for full details.
One of South Australia’s oldest buildings, Adelaide Gaol features unique architecture and a wealth of history.
Over 147 years, the Gaol housed some of the state’s most notorious and dangerous criminals. Step back in time and walk the hallways and cells of South Australia’s first inmates. Experience what life was like behind bars for almost 300,000 prisoners who once called Adelaide Gaol home. Open for business from 1841 to 1988, the Gaol was one of Australia’s longest continuously operational prison facilities.
Enjoy a self-guided tour, or book a guided ghost tour or history tour with one of our four private tour operators. We also offer guided education programs which are great for school groups – bookings essential.
