Wine Legends

Food and Wine Tours

Wine Legends is a Barossa Valley based tour operator that focuses on private wine tours that aim to educate, stimulate and enhance future wine sharing experiences. Guests on tour are treated to a privately tailored tour put together by a professionally trained host.

Wine Legends tours can be booked either focused on a particular subject matter or as completely unique tour. With tours such as ‘Ancestral Vines & Ancient Wines’ or ‘Emerging Talent’ you may select what you would like to experience or leave it to the host. With privately booked tastings and introductions you will experience the wine region as though you are being greeted by an old friend.

Wine Legends guests don’t just rave about their experience – they book to come back and experience more.

There are some seriously old vines in the Barossa. Way back in the 1800’s settlers planted vines from cuttings brought over on ships in wet hessian sacks – they’ve not only survived two world wars & global warming but thanks to the non proliferation of phylloxera in Australia they are the oldest continuously producing grape vines of their varietals in the world.
The Ancestral Vines tour will let you discover these glorious old vines (once pulled from existence with the vine pull scheme of the 1980’s) of which there are only 30% left of the original vines planted by the first settlers. Meet the custodians of these vines who not only will talk you through how they look after these incredible relics but share their secrets – you will be required to wear shoe covers for the protection of the vines whilst on tour when visiting these vineyards.

Ever since moving to the Barossa I have been fascinated by the new blood making awesome wines in their sheds and, in some cases, under the noses of their employers. The days of making wine under a false name seem to be gone and a culture of creativity and collaboration is rising up in what I always thought was a strictly ‘old school’ wine region.
Our Emerging Talent tour will excite you with new wine styles, lateral winemaking and different takes on fruit source and terroir. There is some serious innovation happening that’s centred around minimal intervention, wild yeast creations and the occasional ‘let it ride’ method.
I have bugged these guys into letting me bring you into their world – often where there’s only a small amount of vino to share between themselves and a few lovestruck Somms in the big smoke.

The great wine region of the Barossa Valley produces some memorable performers – Peter Lehmann, Wolf Blass, Penfolds the list goes on. This got me thinking about the lesser known names here in what can be a tough gig to stick at. Making wine is a lot like making a great song, you can play your favourite tune and be extremely talented but still be unrecognisable to many
The Long Way to The Top Tour aims to showcase those wine producers in the Barossa Valley that have stuck it out through thick and thin and are still producing some fantastic (but underrated) wines in the region. Some you may have heard of, others will be new names to you – the kind of folk who walk past you in the airport after a tough gig selling their stories in board rooms and dining rooms across the globe.
Strap yourself in and be prepared to be educated, stimulated and perhaps elated when meeting some legends of the Australian wine industry that you may not be aware of but I am sure will take pride of place in your wine fridge at home.
