Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint, has substantial links to Portland. Saint Mary came to Portland in 1862 as a governess. From 1863 Mary taught at common school no.510 for almost two years where she developed teaching and organisational skills which stood her in good steed throughout her life.

The Josephite Order has continues the work commenced by Mary MacKillop. The vast stone well associated with the MacKillops’ first home in Portland remains at the back of Quest Apartments and is on view to the public.
