Koorie Heritage Trust – Aboriginal Walking Tours

Cultural and Theme Tours

Discover Aboriginal Victoria on one of the Koorie Heritage Trust’s Aboriginal Walking Tours in the heart of Melbourne.

The tours offer an insight into the rich and complex history of the world’s oldest continuous living culture. The tour takes visitors through Federation Square and down to the Birrarung Wilam Aboriginal art installations where they will learn the history of Birrarung Marr and the Kulin nation.

These tours offer an introduction to Aboriginal culture and discuss how European settlement has impacted on Aboriginal people of Victoria.

Led by local Aboriginal guides, each guide will share their personal perspective, where visitors will learn about how the land on which Melbourne is located has changed over time. They will also gain a deeper understanding of Melbourne’s importance as a meeting place and location for social, educational and cultural events and activities.

Visitors will also benefit from the knowledge and insights only an Aboriginal guide can provide, ensuring a connection to place.

The tour ends at the Koorie Heritage Trust where participants can be immersed in the Trust’s permanent collection, public gallery and shopKOORIE.

The tours are held each Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 1:00pm (except public holidays). Duration: one hour. Bookings essential.

Their Scar Tree Walk is a cultural journey that connects traditional and contemporary Aboriginal cultures and the histories of the local Kulin Peoples.

Led by one of their experienced Koorie Guides, the gentle walk begins at the Koorie Heritage Trust and meanders through the Birrarung Wilam (Common Ground) Aboriginal art installations that will provide a background to what you will experience on the walk. The walk continues over the William Barak Bridge that crosses Batman Avenue, where you will learn the history of these two significant figures who have shaped the history of Melbourne for both the local Aboriginal peoples and settlers.

Once over the bridge, you will enter a traditional Kulin Nation meeting place thousands of years old that has become a significant contemporary meeting place for all Melbournians and Victorians today. Here you will learn of the continuing local Aboriginal culture in the setting of major sporting events at the MCG before finishing at the Scar Trees, a protected cultural heritage site. This site will provide you with an understanding of history and culture that is 60,000 years old within a contemporary setting.
