Discover the fascinating history of State Library Victoria and explore some of the many iconic spaces with a one-hour tour hosted by a friendly and passionate volunteer.

The spaces you’ll visit include: the magnificent heritage reading rooms (La Trobe Reading Room and Redmond Barry Reading Room) where visitors can browse collections of books, magazines and music, renowned galleries and The Ian Potter Queens Hall, the new display of Ned Kelly’s armour, alongside his colourfully worded Jerilderie letter.

Each tour can facilitate 10 people, and bookings are essential.

Established in 1854 and spanning an entire city block, State Library Victoria houses many secret spaces.

In this tour, you’ll make your way from the highest point of the iconic Dome in the La Trobe Reading Room to the hidden areas below the Library, known as ‘the catacombs’. Explore Library spaces usually closed to the public, including the Pendulum Staircase, Card Catalogue room and the Elephant Lift, which was used to transport stuffed elephants when the building was home to Melbourne Museum.
