Affinity Quartet at Hawthorn Arts Centre

Concert or Performance

31 May 2024 Once Only Event

Affinity Quartet made history last year at Hawthorn Arts Centre when they won the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. They return on 31 May to relive the magic.

The Melbourne based ensemble were the first Australian group to win the grand prize in its 32-year history. At the competition Affinity Quartet was awarded the Audience Prize, the Robert Salzer String Quartet First Prize, and the Monash University Grand Prize.

Violinists Josephine Chung and Nicholas Waters, violist Ruby Shirres and cellist Mee Na Lojewski have recently also won major prizes in four international string quartet competitions.

Returning home after a period in Europe, their program of Haydn, Beethoven and Bartók promises a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of the string quartet across two centuries.

Affinity Quartet leads the next generation of Australia’s chamber music with an inspired approach to music-making and their adventurous spirit as a string quartet for and of today.

Repertoire:
Haydn String Quartet op. 76 no. 3 ‘Emperor’
Beethoven String Quartet op.18 no.2 in G major
Interval
Bartok String Quartet no.1 in A minor
