Mount Panorama/Wahluu

Landmarks and Buildings

Mount Panorama/Wahluu is one of the Bathurst region’s iconic attractions.

Significant to the Wiradjuri peoples as Wahluu (which means “to watch over”), it was from here that young Wiradjuri men would watch over their land and the movements of travellers to and from the valley.

In the 1930s, Mayor Griffin and the Bathurst Council had a vision of creating a premier motor racing circuit. After initially being rejected for funding by the federal depression employment relief fund as a racetrack, money was eventually secured under the same program for the development of a scenic drive.

The first races were held in 1938 and have been held annually ever since. Today, many visitors are surprised to discover that the circuit is also a scenic drive accessible throughout the year outside of race and community events.

With the 2020 addition of the $2 million Mount Panorama Scenic Boardwalk and Lookout, visitors can now step out and look over Bathurst, gaining a new perspective on the region.
