Absalom’s Gallery

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Few people deserve the label ‘larger-than-life’ more than artist Jack Absalom, a South Australian wanderer who learned bush skills from Indigenous people on the Nullarbor Plain as a child, before making Broken Hill his home for the last 70 years of his life.

Visit the Jack Absalom Gallery in the heart of the Silver City to find a wide selection of his evocative oil paintings, capturing the space and colour of the outback landscapes he knew so well. One of the five so-called ‘Brushmen of the Bush’, Absalom’s work has been exhibited across Australia and throughout the world.

During his lifetime, he was also an outback adventurer, survivalist, author and TV personality, producing books and programs on bushcraft and how to travel safely through the vast desert wilderness that makes up this corner of the country. As such, you’ll also discover prints, books and an excellent collection of opals on display.

The gallery is open weekdays, 10am to 4pm. Closed in January and February.
