Broken Hill Heritage Walk Tour

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

To get a sense of why Broken Hill was named Australia’s first heritage city, slow down and take a stroll around town in the presence of an expert. The two-hour Broken Hill Heritage Walk Tour, led by volunteer guides, visits some of the city’s most striking and important buildings.

Expect to stop in front of a number of historic façades, such as the 1905 Trades Hall, the red-brick Post Office, and the iconic Palace Hotel, which ironically began life as an alcohol-free coffee house, commissioned by the temperance movement in 1889.

You’ll pass down streets named after metals, minerals and compounds, giving you a flavour of how the city and its distinctive culture developed on the back of the mining boom. You’ll also learn from the knowledgeable guides how the city’s past and present are inextricably entwined.

Tours depart from the Broken Hill Visitor Information Centre regularly, except during the summer.
