Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum

Galleries, Museums and Collections

In 1906, the Australian Government resolved to ensure Australia’s self-sufficiency in meeting its defence requirements. Consequently, the Lithgow Small Arms Factory began production in 1912.

This museum, located on the site of the Small Arms Factory, honours the illustrious history of Australia’s first high-precision mass production facility and the remarkable individuals associated with it. It is a showcase of Australian manufacturing and innovation.

Over the years of its operation, Lithgow SAF collected military rifles and machine guns from around the world. These, along with the factory’s own manufactured firearms, serve as the foundation for the comprehensive exhibition of military firearms.

In addition to its military endeavours, the SAF proved its versatility by manufacturing a diverse array of non-military products. The Museum displays an intriguing assortment of commercial products, from home appliances, to agricultural, industrial and medical equipment and parts.

In 2006, Ron Hayes generously donated his impressive collection of handguns. The Hayes Gallery includes duelling flintlocks, delicate ladies muff pistols, and intricately hand-engraved masterpieces, captivating even those without a specific interest in firearms.

The ‘General Machine Shop’, constructed in 1923, is a continually evolving exhibit that highlights the industrial machinery and processes employed in manufacturing. While it is a work in progress, visitors are welcome to explore the museum’s historic machinery collection housed in this impressive, industrial building.
