Sapphire Coast Oyster Trail
Food and Drink Merimbula, Bega Valley, New South Wales
Take a road trip along the Oyster Trail and explore one of Australia’s most significant oyster regions. The Sapphire Coast’s pristine estuaries are perfect for growing the native Sydney rock oyster, with five key locations including Wonboyn Lake, Pambula Lake, Merimbula Lake, Nelson Lagoon and Wapengo Lake.
Visit Wonboyn Rock Oysters at Wonboyn Lake, where you can pick up a dozen from the family-owned farm on the edge of Nadgee wilderness.
Stunning Pambula Lake is a must-stop location for any oyster lover. Sail down the river on an oyster barge with Captain Sponge’s Magical Oyster Tours, or enrol in Oyster School with Broadwater Oysters. Active adventurers can enjoy a kayaking tour with Navigate Expeditions, including an oyster shuck class and opportunity to purchase fresh oysters from the farm gate.
Merimbula Lake is home to The Oyster Barn, where lakeside dining awaits. Don’t miss Wheeler’s Seafood Restaurant, where their oysters take one of the shortest tide to table journeys on the coast, plucked from their family-owned Wheeler’s Oysters farm.
Continuing north, try some of Australia’s most awarded molluscs from Tathra Oysters at their town shopfront. Their oysters are grown at stunning Nelson Lagoon within Mimosa Rocks National Park.
The oyster farms at Wapengo Lake aren’t open to the public, but you can try organic Wapengo Rocks oysters at Pividori’s Tathra Beach or at other local restaurants.
