The West Arnhem area is administered by the West Arnhem Regional Council. Within its borders is the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park which is a popular tourist destination and in the north the area area encompasses the Cobourg Peninsula and is bounded by the Arafura Sea.
Indigenous people lived in the area for thousands of years and most of this country is Aboriginal freehold land held by the Northern Land Council. Permits are required to enter areas east of Kakadu National park from the East Alligator River.
