Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory and is Australia’s northernmost capital. the CBD has a population of around 5000 residents andis located on a low bluff overlooking the harbour. Darwin is gateway for tourism in the territory the starting point to popular destinations such as Kakadu National Park, Litchfield National Park and Katherine Gorge.
Darwin’s central business district is bounded by Daly Street in the north-west, McMinn Street in the north-east, Mitchell Street on the south-west and Bennett Street on the south-east. The CBD has recently seen a number of major projects, including the billion dollar redevelopment of the Stokes Hill wharf waterfront area and a convention centre with hotels, residential apartments and public spaces.
There are many Weekly markets which are popular featuring food, souvenirs, clothes and some performing artists. The Darwin Festival is held annually in August, along with several other festivals and events during the dry season (May-September).
