Down the Line: Communication in Gawler

Galleries, Museums and Collections

The Gawler Heritage Gallery exhibition ‘Down the Line’ explores the themes of communication and its role in building communities. Discover the impact of the postal service, the telegraph and the telephone on the Gawler community, allowing them to stay connected to each other and the wider world.

View rare early colonial letters, telegraph equipment brought to South Australia by Charles Todd and a collection of funky antique phones. Make a call using the magneto telephone and try your hand at morse code with our telegraph equipment. Hear the voices of the women of the Gawler telephone exchange as they ‘connect your call’.

This exhibition is an opportunity to understand more about the evolution of communication technologies that have been fundamental in keeping communities informed and connected.
